I was hiking in this general area the day this happened. Why on earth would anyone pick up a rattlesnake?? It's really sad but also was totally preventable. Snake bite treatment in the wilderness is something I'm really not very clear on, there's so much conflicting information. I generally focus on avoiding snakes while in the wilderness and wearing boots. A couple people I know have been bitten on the foot walking around in sandals.

@Jennifer@m.ai6yr.org I looked into wilderness snake bite protocol at one point because I was camping in rattlesnake country. The advice was treat it like a puncture wound and get to a major hospital in less than 3 hours or make peace. It's very survivable iffff you can beat those 3 hours. 😬
But also very avoidable. Just give them space.
