Curious. I had no idea underground cables were insulated with oil.

I wonder if new cables still are? If so, the Greens may need to factor that into their constant opposition to green energy infrastructure and advocacy for underground cabling so that their countryside/farmer/NIMBY segments don't have to look at pylons.

Ah, no they aren't:

"A spokesperson for ENA said the electricity distribution companies had not used heavy oil in newly laid fluid-filled cables for about 40 years and now used biodegradable substances, solid insulation and sealed cabling."
