If I was in an ultra advanced future civilization, I'd have much better things to do than run a simulation of my ancestors, and then make it so they felt they were alive but didn't know they were in a simulation.

If this were a simulation, there's no knowing who'd be running it; it wouldn't need to be our descendents or anything that remotely resembled us. We could be a GCSE benchtop demonstration or an executive toy like Newton's cradle.
(In fact, the beings in charge would probably be Frankie and Benjy.)
