Last month, the European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen signed a treaty with Trump. The details are truly embarrassing. US goods will be exported to Europe tariff-free, but European exports to the US will be slapped with a 15% levy. Europe even threw in a promise of $600bn in fresh investments into the US economy and to buy $750bn of US oil and gas by the end of 2028. Von der Leyen has overlooked the “key lesson” from Trump’s first term: never make promises you can’t deliver.
