ok serious time: don't EVER rig equipment or lighting more than a foot off the ground without a secure clamp and a safety cable. I don't give a fuck what the context is, you just don't do it.
shitty YOLO safety culture is what gives someone a life changing traumatic brain injury.
the reason we get to keep doing crazy shit at hacker events is because behind all the jokey façade of danger there's someone who unwaveringly gives a shit about the safety of people around them and does things right.

Safety is habits.
You always have a safety cable. And you always use it. No exceptions. Ever.
Once you start making exceptions, you find other edge cases and make more and suddenly someone gets hurt, because you lost the habit of always doing it right.
"oh it's only a meter off the ground" yeah so's a kid's skull, fuck you, do your job properly.
if you let this shit slide and you slack off on safety culture then you will hurt someone, and someone will come and take your toys away.
you only get to play with the toys if you can be trusted with them.
don't fuck it up.

and if you're ignoring the problem to the point where people in the know are having to call out your shoddy rigging on social media because pointing it out in-person resulted in no action, you've got a serious organisational problem on your hands and you need to tackle it head-on.

pissed off that we're having this conversation again.
grow the fuck up, take responsibility.

@gsuberland@chaos.social Thank you!
People need to remember that the late Curtis Mayfield almost died in the accident on August 13, 1990 and was never was able to fully play music again.
Do the job right, and you don't get to be remembered as the person who destroyed a living legend.
