Sometimes I wonder about how much compute power is wasted on building a static blog or whatever as a multi-zone, multi-cloud docker image running on Kubernetes with automatic scaling and redundant load balancing. Because that's what "modern DevOps" looks like

When it could just be a fucking VPS

@CursedSilicon@social.restless.systems I’d be happy with an S3 bucket, if someone other than Amazon would implement the Website feature, and if you didn’t need a VPS anyway or a CDN to do TLS termination.

The normalization of
#WastefulComputing is just absurd, and I'm not talking about the "#QualityOfLife" improvements of like #Portainer to run a complex ticketing system without having to manually setup ElasticSearch & PostgreSQL, but the absurdity of what could've been essentially #HTML5 + #CSS3 (and maybe #JS6) *at most...
Not everything needs to be a
"hyperscaling #Microservices Framework" across multiple "#Cloud" holsters!

@CursedSilicon@social.restless.systems ah, found the straw man argument.

Yes, companies do end up occasionally building with a thing when they should use something else.

For example: a static blog most simply could be a simple runner that uploads the results to ftp or s3, still a commit cicd (GitHub actions or a post receive hook on gitolite)

If it's a very tiny blog, then a VPS is probably fine.

But if you're already in a static engine, they have ways to upload to CDNs super easy, and then you don't need an OS

@CursedSilicon@social.restless.systems while I'm trying to learn Prometheus and snmp_exporter - which has terrible docs - most of the anecdotal docs/blogs I find tell me to fire up the docker of it

... like it's a single binary my dude.

And there's other Unixes than your systemd distribution.

Yes I'm sure your Grafana chart with live IP geolocation of web traffic as you get hit by HackerNews is very, very impressive

But is it worth the six figure cloud provider bill and SRE team running it?

@mWare@mstdn.ca systemd distribution? I use Gentoo, sir!

Seriously though I don't have any particular distaste for Prometheus/Grafana. The sheer over-engineering of "simple things" like "static HTML blogs" just grate me
