Oliver Cromwell died on September 3, 1658—probably from an infection . He received a huge funeral and a burial in Westminster Abbey. Then, under his son Richard, the monarchy was restored in 1660, and Charles II returned. In 1661, his body was dug up, 'tried' for treason, hanged at Tyburn, beheaded, and thrown in a common grave. The head was spiked above Westminster Hall. Ironically, Cromwell had allowed Charles I's head to be sewn back on so the family could pay respects.
