I had a relative who had all kinds of Chinese musical instruments and he let me play all of them quite badly as a child.

He was always supportive and he said ‘you should think about playing in a Chinese funeral band’ and I always found it hilarious.

Lately, I’ve been thinking about learning some of these instruments more formally (I only have western classical music training and some jazz). There’s a woman who teaches Chinese music at a community music school here in SF and I’ve been curious. Or I could just sit with these guys every week and see what they do hehe

I probably play the dizi (the Chinese flute) and the suona (the Chinese trumpet) best. Those also map to my ‘western’ instruments
