"The report also revealed that while both men and women showed similar patterns, the associations were stronger for men."

"Can we stop supporting sociopathic leaders? Isnβt it possible to recognize these qualities as dangerous warning signs of unfitness rather than expressions of strength? What does it say about our body politic that so many Americans are drawn to these types of people? Is this attraction a dangerous affliction found in every society? Should there be psychological tests as one guardrail against their continuing success?"

@wdlindsy@toad.social Yes, one of the many things from the Star Trek universe that would help our societies today. Every officer in Starfleet must undergo multiple and lengthy psychological assessments, evaluations, and testing. and the one's who are psycho get dropped from the service.
@wdlindsy@toad.social The body politic is under educated, misled, and easily manipulated. Itβs the conditions that allow con men to rise, cult leaders to flourish, and insane men & women to hold political power.
Frankly the conditions of political leadership are conditions that no sane person would subject themselves to allowing space sociopaths, psychopaths, and ego maniacs to assume power. Being president, a cabinet secretary, or high ranking federal politician ruins any personal privacy or normal family life, the only reward is power. Those conditions can that attract horrible people and turn good people bad.
@NJWookie@mindly.social True, except I think we can compare some conspicuous examples of people who embody the psychopathic-narcissistic model of public service and those who, however flawed, seem to be about public service. And I think the tally of narcissistic psychopaths on one side of the political divide far, far exceeds the tally on the other side, no matter how flawed it may be.

Having worked inside Federal government my experience is that, behind closed doors, there are more psychopathic narcissists on either side than you think. They are very good at hiding it and we forgive the ones that are aligned with our preferred causes and directions. Even those that go into service for the right reasons and mentally healthy are often corrupted by the power they are given.

@NJWookie@mindly.social I look at both sides, two parties, the two poles right now, and it's very, very clear to me that they are not equivalent, that they are not equally maleficent and destructive, that one is moving as fast as possible to usher in a fascist regime and other is not. I don't have time for the both-sides game because it distorts reality, and I think we all need to do all we can to stay rooted in reality right now.

I agree. Iβm not making to both sides are the same argument. I only am saying that power can change well meaning individuals and we need to remain vigilant to see those changes toward bad intentions within those we support. Active politicians and candidates that show a willingness and drive to limit their own power and/or to take powerful influence out of the system are the ones I support most. I honestly donβt want the politicians that crave the job for themselves but are truly doing it to serve their constituents.
