Doing some more work making more options available directly in Settings rather than having to open Control Panel
As always, appreciate your feedback π

We've made a lot of improvements to Settings over the years - how's it working for you these days?
@JenMsft@mastodon.social
Everything seems so tedious now. For example if you want to turn off all the sensor permissions you need to click/switch/back for like 30 of them. I know it's an intentional dark pattern, but it shouldn't be that way. Fortunately there are scripts.
Then my IT department calls me wanting to know why I'm running something called 'privacy.sexy' on my AVD box because it's 'malware'.
Sorry, I'm trying to not beat you up here, it's just frustrating using a user-hostile OS. I used to enjoy Microsoft operating systems, from NT 3.5, to betas of every OS from Win2k through mid-beta 10, even Millenium! (Sorry, didn't test that one enough.)
Okay, I'll stop ranting. None of this is probably your fault. Just frustrating how much time I've wasted trying to undo or block what's been done to the OS.
@JenMsft@mastodon.social I really dislike that Settings is single-instance and has much lower density than classic Control Panel. Plus way too many things take too long to load, making the UI jump around.
And it also looks awful in high contrast mode (also, I think I just found a new bug β trying to edit and save a custom High Contrast theme doesn't work most of the time; when I click "Save As", enter a [new*] name, then "Save and Apply", the theme is neither applied, nor saved, the edits just vanish).
* this is also annoying, once you create a custom high contrast theme, you can't edit it any more, all edits must be saved with a unique name
@JenMsft@mastodon.social I still go directly into some old control panels using Win+R, particularly mmsys.cpl (Windows Vista/7-era Sound control panel) and appwiz.cpl (Windows Vista/7-era Programs and Features). I just like working with an unchanging UI that gets the job done.
@jernej__s@infosec.exchange Are you experiencing that issue saving (where the edits vanish) consistently? I can't reproduce it. If you're seeing it regularly, would it be possible to file feedback with a trace?
@JenMsft@mastodon.social Oh, and another gripe with Settings: carousels. Let me type the dates and times, don't force me to mouse everything.
@JenMsft@mastodon.social I noticed it when I tried to figure out why the background colour on hovering is so awful while writing the previous toot, this was in my clean VM (24H2, 26100.4652, running in VMWare Workstation; I used a VM due to the other mentioned problem, where you can't apply a custom high contrast theme without saving it under a new name, and I already have enough copies of my theme with minor changes).
It's probably been a year or more since I last tweaked the theme, so I'm not sure when the problem appeared. In the VM the issue wasn't consistent, it worked completely randomly.
