Current old people have had pretty eventful lives - many of them were born during the largest war the world has ever seen and saw astonishing things happen. They've witnessed the pinnacle of human endeavour, and its recent decline, and mainly live how they want.
I do wonder what our kids will have to show for it all when they hit 80.
