If you’re on Linux, there’s a good chance you use GNOME: it’s the default experience across Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora Workstation, Endless OS, and more. If you’re on another desktop, you still likely use components developed by GNOME contributorsβ€”or maybe you get apps from Flathub.

@cassidy@mastodon.blaede.family I'll consider befriending Gnome when it lets me use a password manager. Currently pinentry-gnome3 is desktop-modal, so whenever I want to switch to my password manager, the whole screen is locked by the password entry dialog and I can't do anything. The "experience" is shit.

(There is an open bug for this issue, but no one has looked at it in years.)

@barubary@infosec.exchange @cassidy@mastodon.blaede.family this can't be real, is this for real ?
That's a serious bug if that's the case. Is this really necessary for any security reasons to be a modal that you can't move around ?

Even on macos the password or bio metrics are not taking the focus exclusively.

@YvanDaSilva@hachyderm.io @cassidy@mastodon.blaede.family If the dialog weren't modal, it would be a lone dialog floating around without an owning window and that would violate the gnome ✨✨aesthetics✨✨. Nothing to do with security.
