People are worked up about the Apple CEO giving someone a gaudy tchotchke, but I’ve read through the announcements and I don’t hate the idea of investing in American manufacturing.

I’ll never forget touring an Amazon distribution center and my guide explaining the warehouses in Europe were quieter and had windows because they were required by European law. Amazon, an American company, treated their American employees worse just because they could.

When I worked at Motorola there were different HR policies for employees in California. For example, California employees didn’t lose unused vacation time at the end of each year, because that was illegal in California. Motorola, an Illinois company, treated people in Illinois worse, because they could.

Apple has made significant investments in the United States before, and we can argue about whether they’d continue to do so without the threat of tariffs, but I think the CEO is doing the best he can in a difficult situation.
