I watched Akira Kurosawa’s first movie for the first time, Sanjuro Sugata. It’s from 1943 and was censored by the Imperial government at the time.

Sanjuro Sugata is a very Akira Kurosawa film. It’s a coming of age film told with empathy and caring.

There’s long telephoto shots. There’s wind-whipped grass tossing on a mountainside. There’s melodramatic music. There’s static shots of clouds in the sky. There’s duels that start with men staring each other down, poised and locked in mortal combat between their eyes before bursting into action.

Takashi Shimura, one of my favorite actors who appeared in 21 of Akira Kurosawa's 30 films is here from the start. Unexpected delight!

I’ve used LLMs to generate a bunch of Python scripts for personal projects (they’re really good at Python for some reason) and it let me tear through a backlog of stuff I’d been avoiding because I frigging hate Python but it’s the best tool for the job sometimes

I’ve been working more with LLM models recently. It seems like any other tool, but it’s a very slippery footgun. If you know what you’re doing, it might help, but if you’re trusting it outside your domain, damn, things could go bad real fast. I think exceptional developers may get exceptional results, but proceed with caution.

My biggest annoyance is the “obvious” solution is usually crap. So you look at what got barfed out and say, e.g. “Can you do that without Combine? Use modern Swift,” and it proudly says “Oh yes this, is much cleaner!”

…why didn’t you give the better solution the first time 😩

I had no idea Jim Carrey had such a tough childhood. And success wasn’t easy. He didn’t get what he wanted, again and again, and just kept trying and trying and changing up what he was doing until he finally got the recognition he’d worked so hard for. Impressive!

I had no idea Jim Carrey had such a tough childhood. And success wasn’t easy. He didn’t get what he wanted, again and again, and just kept trying and trying and changing up what he was doing until he finally got the recognition he’d worked so hard for. Impressive!

It’s very important to use the word “just” when making these kinds of sweeping proclamations. It really drives home your nuanced understanding of all the messy details.
