Sometimes I try to think through just how many layers of virtualization and indirection happen on my system even just opening a web browser and going to example.com all the way down to the CPU actually doing transistor stuff with AND and NAND and OR whatevers.
Like you probably have 3 or 4 before you even get to the OS kernel.
And then you talk about doing hyperscaler shit in containers in the cloud... Like just how much of computing is pure waste from all the virtualization and indirection?
@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange is npm or docker or k8s involved? cuz if so its like four hundred billion trillion

@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange fucking...
in like.. i wanna say maybe 1995 or 1996 i tried installing linux on my windows 98 machine for the first time. i dual booted. and i learned that i could play quake2 if i just dropped the linux binary into the quake2 dir and ran that in linux. it worked like a champ and was trivially twice as fast.
since then we've added ten westers dictionaries worth of layered thickness to computers, and we lose SO MUCH to all that needless overhead.

@Viss@mastodon.social @JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange I am with you, but we are quite literally the old people yelling at clouds.

Eh, isn't that kinda the point of getting old? Being able to rant about shit that your generation fucked up and handed to younger generations?
