To clarify, it it a little more than a bulb change. The wiring is corroded and really the whole light assembly needs replacing so it does not refill itself.
Insert "headlight fluid" memes here.
@aly@mastodon.nz too late to just drill a small drain hole in the bottom? At least you had a go :)
I had the same thing on a rear light assembly. I drilled holes and drained the water, but the loom was corroded.
So off to a wrecker where I picked up a mini-loom (which goes from the rear lights to the main loom) with working bulb for twenty bucks. Dude wanted $25 but I said I only had a twenty. ;-)
Passed the warrant.

@BobLefridge@mastodon.nz @Niall@mastodon.nz Nicely done. Unfortunately the actual light covers have some damage too, which is related to why they are full of water.
This is totally a things I could fix if I could easily find the parts.
@aly@mastodon.nz @BobLefridge@mastodon.nz @Niall@mastodon.nz Iβve been able to get various auto parts from AliExpress. Have replaced all kinds of stuff on our 2006 VW Golf thanks to Ali
@sumisu3@mastodon.nz @BobLefridge@mastodon.nz @Niall@mastodon.nz Am I letting you talk me in to continuing this DIY quest..?
@aly@mastodon.nz @BobLefridge@mastodon.nz @Niall@mastodon.nz well, if you can find the parts and the price is reasonable it might be worth it.
I also had to use windscreen sealant/caulk around the taillights on our other car as they kept filling with water. Never did figure out exactly where it was getting in so I did an ugly but effective job.
Some of the taillights are big single units that can be a bigger project but some Internet searching and watching some videos can help you decide if it is an effort you want to pursue or not.
As another option... wreckers will almost certainly have the whole taillight assembly at a reasonable price. And they're negotiable for cash. ;-)
@sumisu3@mastodon.nz @aly@mastodon.nz @Niall@mastodon.nz
@BobLefridge@mastodon.nz @aly@mastodon.nz @Niall@mastodon.nz thatβs definitely the ticket if you want to get the whole assembly.
@sumisu3@mastodon.nz @BobLefridge@mastodon.nz @Niall@mastodon.nz oh alright then. I shall trawl the wreckers a bit. I think on this car it's likely just a single plastic unit, and then the wiring harness.
@sumisu3@mastodon.nz @BobLefridge@mastodon.nz @Niall@mastodon.nz I'll have you know that this is the second time in two weeks that I have been... gently nudged... in to sucking it up and finishing the repair myself.
How do I feel about this? Good. Really good. It's how I want to live. Caring for things. Maintaining and repairing. Building when I can. Not always just consuming.
It's not always easy in a busy life, but with a little peer support and encouragement we can do a lot together.
