my collection of atomic weapons testing photos is not insubstantial, and occasionally I'll run into one or ten while looking through old photos for something unrelated. they tend to accumulate during certain eras, then long breaks, another stretch of collecting, etc.

it's been a bit, but I do quite love this one from late 2017. the asymmetrical composition, mushroom perfectly arisen, stalk nestled in the one third curvature of the beach, rugged waves continuing to break, the vast indifference from nature to such intense and rapid destruction; the lasting decades of radiation and fallout nothing more than a speck of dust in the timespan of the world.

@codinghorror@infosec.exchange @mainframed767@infosec.exchange the scientist who discovered the first process for making Insulin didn't want to "own it", he wasn't worried about people "stealing it". he gave it away to the betterment of humanity on the whole.

these types of contributions are extensive in our history. the entire concept of ownership of ideas is garbage thinking, it's an attempt for dividends on cognitive function, it's selfishness.

I never wanted a patent for anything important that I worked on, created, contributed to. that's Open Source. that's BSD license. I keep hearing self important people complain about this concept of stolen ideas. it's bullshit. give back. life and existence is a group effort and we are not unique individual snowflakes who deserve attention for momentary brain waves.

the money comes from providing a service, from the action, not from the idea. that's what I've built my career on, and it's most often been a very positive experience.

Women's Safety Online: Why I'm No Longer on LinkedIn or Twitter: https://prose.winterschon.com/2025/05/29/womens-safety-online-why-im.html

The vast and varied subject of β€˜Women’s Safety Online’ is a topic which impacts many facets of daily life, including emotional and physical well-being. This post is not a primer on the concepts, rather it offers a short timeline to explain why I am no longer on LinkedIn or Twitter social networks for reasons of personal safety and privacy.

less than two weeks to go until another relocation, another return. this time I'll have been gone for 366 days. It's been an interesting interlude, one of many extended adventures away from California. nationally or internationally, try as I might, over all of those decades somehow life just keeps pulling me back. perhaps one of these years I'll just stick around.

🚯🚯 No More Markdown 🚯🚯

Well, it's certainly not going away any time soon, but it doesn't have to be the default. While it's easily a majority of the docs formats that I have to use, it's not my favorite.

Perhaps in an ideal world it would be AsciiDoc or LaTeX
All The Time, but we don't live in that world, oh well πŸ’‹πŸ’‹

In the interim, here's someone who wrote about the topic which seems worth sharing. Interesting points, ja?

πŸ™„πŸ™„ Modern Communications πŸ™„πŸ™„

How shall we contact you? Apparently, not easily.

1. Cell phone, no. Inconsistent for years now.
- Pixel 9 Fold: hardware failure, provider failure. Couldn't port number from Verizon to GFi.
- iPhone 15, hardware failure. Couldn't port from T-Mobile to Verizon.
- TCL 60 5G (color eInk), great phone, but I have no idea what the number is among all of the former ones and it's possibly not even turned on anymore.

2. SIP / VOIP phone: sure, the desk phone rings, and SMS can be received but can't go out (why? I have no idea, and I'm tired of troubleshooting).

3. Email: sure, if thunderbird didn't keep crashing, corrupting cache, and deleting months of messages during folder sync operations. Backups, sure, but the workflow is so broken now that I don't bother. Filters are ruined, recreating filters - no,no,never, again, please,no, the spam is overwhelming. I don't want to miss using Gmail, come on now, wtf.

4. Matrix? iMessage? XMPP, IRC? Whatsomething? Someothernetwork?
Too many networks, too much segmentation, no universal anything, forget useful or consistent notifications across several devices.

5. Write me a letter... actually don't, because USPS routinely loses important packages or the mail is stolen by literal gangs and the Feds don't prosecute anymore. Also, I don't own any paper or any pens, and forget about stamps.

6. Telegram? Signal? No.
Guess what's linked to a cell phone number? And even when you pay for the Very Special Money account on Telegram they will not respond to messages about having lost one's cell phone number (see #1). If you've tried to message me on Telegram since June, those messages are gone - I cannot access them ever again apparently.

Quite a relaxing Saturday, though still productive. Early morning work on a private cloud architecture for Gentoo VM hosts with Rocky 8/9 VMs, then a very pleasant nap, followed by two hours at the pool for the first time in years, real D3 from the sun!

Afternoon resumed a legacy effort to process RAW slide scans of old "Scala 200" and "Provia 400" photos from the 90s (always shot at 100 ISO, with exposure coefficient adjustment to get deeper contrast). So, yeah, here's late teenage me.
