After years of using CSS Grid, I’ve recently come to a better understanding of 1fr in a repeat(X, 1fr) context.

I’d always thought of these
repeat scenarios (with something like 1fr 1fr 1fr being a different means to the same end) as giving equal width, but that’s not what they do.

When a column’s content occupies more width it will collapse the width of another column
where it can. This is incredibly useful:

There was an old country that swallowed some wood;
We should recall it had loads of wood!
It swallowed the wood to catch the coal,
It swallowed the coal to catch the steel,
It swallowed the steel to catch the oil,
It swallowed the oil to catch more coal,
It swallowed more coal to create The Cloud,
That squiggled and jiggled and tickled its crowds.

It swallowed The Cloud to catch AI;
I don’t know why it swallowed AI – perhaps it’ll die

Black Friday is when there are loads of discounted goods.

But Black January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December are the months when your future is discounted

Doctorow on the bait-and-switch of self-driving car boosters:
β€œMaking a car that can navigate a well-behaved, non-adversarial world is relatively straightforward. But demanding that the entire world behave itself [as the boosters do]? Well, that’s the hard problem of 100,000 years of civilization and ethics. A product that only works in an ideal world isn’t a viable product.”

Good job western governments, taking nearly 80 years to commit to recognising a state just before it gets wiped off the map because you wouldn’t recognise it

β€œFor the Torment Nexus to get built it needs to convince you that your only option for survival is to build the Torment Nexus, much like an AI company telling us that the only path to solving the climate crisis is to use what’s left of Earth’s resources to power its AI in the hope that it will come up with a solution to the climate crisis”
