I'm married and father to three. I live in the Cascade foothills outside Seattle with my family and small flock of chickens.

In 2002, Larry Wall, the inventor of Perl, answered a reader question on Slashdot: "How can a scientific or at least technical mind believe in God?" I hope you enjoy his answer as much as I did:

Thoughts on moving to a more #rural area ...

Like many, we moved out of the city because of
#remotework. We have 2.5 acres, lots of wildlife, and easy access to awesome outdoors activities. Last night after I logged off, I hopped in the truck w/ my fishing kayak, caught three trout, and was back in two hours. If we want to head into town, it's just 25 minutes away.

We meet people three ways: Walking with our dog, dropping off/picking up kids at the school bus stop, and social events that neighbors host.

The irony is that it's easier to approach and talk to people here because people don't have their guard up like you need to do in the city. When you're in an urban area, you generally want to be careful about who you interact with.

I rode the bus into downtown Seattle and Bellevue for 15 years. I used to play chess in Westlake Park during my lunch breaks (see photo). Yeah, I miss some of those old times. But a lot of what I liked is gone now.

Generally, rural areas will be more conservative. I'm fine with people holding stupid opinions. I don't need to agree with them, but I can treat them like people and more than just their politics.

If you can, I recommend making the
#rurallife move. I think it's good for society to have more diverse opinions in #ruralamerica.

An analysis of why Mastodon failed to capitalize on the Twitter migration according to a former Mastodon admin. These all match my experience

1. Features competitive to Twitter of 2008 when we’re in 2023
2. Users don’t care about decentralization
3. Decentralization makes the user experience worse
4. Its decision makers consider its usability flaws to be features not bugs.
5. It’s culture is exclusionary

@carnage4life@mas.to "Decentralisation is not a selling point for 99% of people." Ouch. That cuts deep, man. #fediverse #activitypub #twittermigration
