Hello, Iβm a composer who works primarily in theatre. At the start of the pandemic my mom got cancer and the doctors told us she should eat organic to avoid pesticides. Since even organic-labeled produce can contain pesticides I decided to grow an organic garden. My posts here will be my #music #gardening #cooking #organic food. Here are a few pics from my kitchen as a means of #introduction.

TL;DR
*Climate change will significantly impact food systems.
*Plants have optimal growing temperatures and many follow seasonal cycles.
*My feed will highlight plants with higher OGT, donβt depend on seasonal cycles or flower in late season.
*Farmers focus on what will sell, leaving new options unexplored.
*Creating demand for these plants would stabilize our food supply.

This thread is about plants that I tried this year and wonβt try again next year as well as ones that did really well.
East coast North America, zone 8/9, rainfall 120cm.
*Updated with pics
Willow oak acorns, Quercus phellos 1/
Surprisingly delicious!
After cold processing, they taste like the smell of fresh hay, wheat and hulled sunflower seeds.
With heat processing, they taste like walnuts with a tinge of bitterness.
This thread demonstrates how to cold-process the acorns and different ways of using them. Read the AltText for more details.

Jackfruit, Artocarpus heterophyllus 1/
Easy care, grows like a beast. It can zone push to at least 8 in the US and still get worthwhile harvest⦠of leaves!
This thread is how to cook with jackfruit leaves. They are dense in nutrition and protein. And theyβre not just for goats!
Young leaves taste slightly sweet and herbal with a tiny tang.
Mature: dark herbal flavor with undertones of star anise.

Apologies if this is a really dumb question. My peppers are ripening and was looking at different wood chips to smoke them with and was really disturbed that you have to pay nearly $10 for a little bag of chips - literally burning money for a little added flavor.
Q
If I dehydrate the peppers next to/on top of the wood chips at a higher heat (175F/80C), could I get the same added flavor?
That way I could reuse the wood chips?
