#introduction
I'm absolutely terrible at self bios despite having to write several of them recently
😅😅

Name is Ethan and professionally I'm a Security Engineer attached to a SOC doing cloud security in the Boston area. My main focus is detection engineering with some threat hunting and (limited) IR thrown in on top. Turns out I enjoy spending hours trying to replicate an exploit so I can get artifacts and improve detection!

Been in infosec for a little over four years and in the IT space for a decade and change. Started out working in media doing various things with SANs. Majored in video production and do very little with that degree anymore.

Outside of work I'm a huge photography nerd and recently got back into film photography and have been burning my way through many many rolls of medium format film. My current rig is a Fuji GW690II which shoots gloriously large 6x9cm negatives.

I own multiple medium format cameras and will happily lend them out to folx in the Boston area if you want to shoot a few 6x6 frames.

I am also involved with ham radio holding my General class license. I haven't gotten around to getting a full HF setup at home so it's mainly portable Parks On The Air activations. I'm active in the National Traffic System and ARES. If you've been wanting to get your ham radio license I'd highly recommend it!

Finally I'm a massive scanner nerd and own way too many of them. I run multiple feeds on Broadcastify and have written some blogs about using a Baofeng to monitor (analog) systems. I will talk your ear off about this and also how Matt Blaze's paper about feds being bad an encryption is still relevant today.

Honestly I probably won't post a ton about professional stuff as I tend to leave most of that at work but hopefully my photos can bring you a bit of a break if they show up on your Local timeline.

Been a while since I've updated it since it didn't gain any traction on the birdsite but I do have a place you can get prints of my #photography

https://ethanhansen.darkroom.tech/

Will be slowly adding new photos and if you see a photo of mine that isn't up there and you want a print of it let me know.

I've personally verified the prints look quite nice up to 16x24 with minimal cropping

Trying out some glass mount antennae for my car. The mag mounts work (and I have very good antennae on them) but water intrusion is a constant threat and I can't trunk lip mount anywhere near the top of my car

All this so I can listen to my scanner in the car, hell I don't even have permanent ham gear in my car

I'll probably keep the mag mounts in my car for any "mission critical" stuff I need to do (like public service events) but for daily driver the glass mount should work fine (I hope)

Feds may encrypt in DC but they don't always encrypt their nationwide and / or common frequencies, especially when it comes to interop or task force radios. Some handy frequencies to scan, especially the NIFOG ones:

I know for a fact they only sometimes encrypt around here

The Battlefield 6 beta is quite fun, even if I'm terrible at it

I think I should resign myself to the fact that I am too jittery to snipe and just run around as the medic or engineer

Blowing up tanks with C4 is fun so maybe I will primary Recon even without a sniper rifle

A small handful of channels still appear to be in the clear but I'm just going to pull the feed down soon

Maybe I'll see if I can find a gap in Broadcastify coverage that I can fill with the scanner

Well I suppose BPD going full time encrypted frees up a desktop scanner for me to use for...well I don't know yet

Well they haven't moved over yet toot

Sounds like they're having units come in and switch out their radios one by one

Okay guess I'll keep the feed up a little longer

No idea when the cutover is happening but I'll be yanking my feed at some point tomorrow morning

One less thing for me to scan during the day

Well the time has finally come: Boston Police is going fully encrypted which means my BPD Broadcastify feed will be shutting down on Saturday

I wonder if the Harbor Maritime Response channel will stay in the clear
