This modest masked bee: how to describe it? It's bigger than the tiny ants in my yard but smaller than the big ants in my yard.

Nice to see the wildlife, including this wasp, taking advantage of my water fountain. Ironically, the bottom level of this fountain has a shallow layer with rocks, where insects could more easily access the water, but this wasp is a risk taker

The nice thing about this apparent (*) drought is that the mosquitoes are gone from my yard, and I can take all the early morning photos I want. Although I have friends in Montreal who say their mosquitoes have gotten worse.

Food: making the best of a bad situation

I had a terrible pizzeria experience yesterday, for many reasons, one of which was the paucity of toppings.
So I enjoyed the good part, and turned the rest of the crust into more pizza today.

Half a pizza in a pizza box. The lack of toppings is striking. There's one slice that's about 1/3 toppings and 2/3 crust. After I ate the parts with toppings, I saved the plentiful crusts, and turned them into more pizza. This time totally loaded with grated cheese, crumbled feta, onions, peppers, and tomatoes. You can't even see the base anymore because it's mostly toppings.

And here's a great golden digger wasp, seen in two halves

The upper half of a gray golden digger wasp seen in goldenrod flowers. It has teardrop shaped eyes and a teardrop shaped black head. Its legs are orange Here we see the back end of the same wasp. Its abdomen is orange close to the waist, and black on the end.

The goldenrod is opening up, and it is abuzz with insects. Here, a Mexican grass carrying wasp. One photo in focus to show its beautiful shape, the other out of focus to show its ethereal coloring.
