SignalFire shares some interesting metrics about big tech engineering orgs.

β’ Average manager to engineer ratio rose from 5.87 to 7.65 over 9 years.
β’ Four-year tenures dipped slightly (59% β 52%), challenging the βjob-hopperβ myth.

Who do you sue when the judge in your court case uses AI and it hallucinates?

Anytime I write about the AI boom, someone responds with a link to an Ed Zitron article claiming thereβs an AI bubble.
Yet every major AI service provider canβt stop talking about how thereβs so much demand for their products they are turning customers away.
AI is literally the only bright spot in the economy right now outside of ICEβs hiring numbers.
Sam Altman talks about how some of their users are forming co-dependent relationships with AI which is causing strong negative reactions between version updates as the AIβs behaviors change.
He also talks about how people now get life advice from AI which while making him uneasy is now something they are designing their products around.
I remember when the media freaked out about research to understand if Facebook news feed affected peopleβs emotions. Sam is building software to direct lives.
Elon Musk has threatened to sue Apple because it is βimpossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store.β
Grok is the #5 free app in the App Store which is a remarkable ranking for an AI that once called itself βMechaHitlerβ

Iβve been an advocate of deleting the code of Alexa & Siri and replacing them with an LLM but this is easier said than done. The unreliability of an LLM contrasts with the expectations people have for these digital assistants.
Alexa+ ignored alarm cancellation requests, hallucinated shopping recommendations, and delivered incorrect information when reviewed by @nytimes@mediastodon.com . Ouch.

Itβs wild that the UK has passed a law requiring Reddit and Wikipedia to age verify users. The law was framed as protecting children from online pornography but seems to have greatly expanded its scope as all such laws do.

While understandable given the rise of AI scrapers, itβs sad to see the open web dying a little each day.
Future generations wonβt realize how much theyβve lost.
