@rysiek@mstdn.social @Gupperduck@mastodon.social @catsalad@infosec.exchange A lot of that was on purpose since fiber is cheap but labor is expensive. Since they were upgrading their systems anyway, they installed fiber well above the needs of current network, and it remained dark for many, many years. Most cities still have a lot of dark fiber that telecoms are essentially paying them not to use so they can have a monopoly on local internet services.

I'm now able to pull back PieFed Feeds and display the results in my Gallery views.

It's a bit slow to show the feed name because I have to retrieve and filter every single feed on the server. There's no way to pull this information just by id or by name.

I might just be tired and overlooking something simple - a tomorrow problem.

@mastodonmigration@mastodon.online from the corporate / government point of view, the problem with fedi is that it's not a panopticon. There are parts of it that aren't in their index, bits they can't see. Not only are the servers distributed, the threads are distributed and they can't easily monitor and control all of it at once.

There might even be two people talking to each other without corporate or government surveillance in between!

They need a system with a big central index, for power and surveillance and control.
