i treasure how weird human beings are. we are just endlessly strange, both individually and collectively. there's a town in Spain where once a year, everyone dresses up like moss. the Catholic Church decrees that, for the purposes of lent, capybara is a fish. watched a video the other day explaining the quicksort algorithm using Hungarian folk dancers. some people use forks to eat, other people use two sticks. both groups have perfectly good hands, but they'd rather use weird little tools.

attention denizens of thepit.social!! we are defederating from Threads.net. if this makes you mad, tell us why and we might change our minds. but as it stands, our rationale is basically the same as Kevin's in the linked post: changes to the Threads.net moderation policy are intended to specifically discriminate against certain groups, and as a rule, we don't federate with instances that do that kind of thing. frankly, it is their loss, we are much cooler.

i'm finally doing it! thepit.social could use some funding to keep the lights on. since November 2022, i have been paying @mastohost@mastodon.social $47.19 per month to keep it running smoothly, and i plan to keep doing that, but any assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated. πŸ™πŸ™ https://ko-fi.com/peterjk

fwiw I don't think any court is ever going to meaningfully find against the AI industry for the same reason they didn't stop YouTube, and European regulators continue to let Meta do whatever it wants: western legal systems serve wealth and power and the AI industry is wealthy and powerful right now. it has nothing to do with the law.

I worked quite a bit with ChatGPT last week and one thing that stands out to me is LLMs will always write more lines of code rather than fewer. they love adding another type check, another try/except block, another condition to the YAML file. just in case! "your code is almost perfect, but consider adding this one thing..." it reminds me of someone who pointed out that a line of code isn't an asset, it's a liability because it's another thing to maintain.

this guy is an asshole and he voted for the Asshole Party because he loved the idea of having an asshole for a president and now he's like "wait, but this is going to affect me personally???"
