Hey #fediverse people, I've an ask: If you appreciate all that I do for the fediverse and open social web, and you'd like to see me continue to do that work, please support my work financially.

Right now I'm having to look for work outside of the Fediverse because I simply cannot make ends meet.

I need €60-70k per year to support myself, with costs everywhere feeling increased (so that number may even be too low)

Right now, year to date, I've received a total of €20,170 in financial support from the community, and €22,450 from NLNet grants. I've also only had minimal freelance work this year, as I've been busy on grant work & try to focus on the fediverse & open social web.

So my total income isn't yet enough to be regularly sustainable. I've had problems being able to make rent payments this year because cashflow on grants comes in large chunks usually months after the work has been done.

So if you want to see me keep doing what I'm doing, please support my work!

So I just realised that the "tech princess" link on my website was broken, after I made my instagram disappear.

Anyway, here's the back story: I was going to React Day Berlin in November 2019, and I was so bored of going to tech conferences in jeans and a t-shirt, and wanted to be
hyper femme, so I bought a huge ballgown and wore that to the conference. I also tried to encourage some other femmes to join me, but didn't have much luck.

It was literally to poke fun at the fact that tech conferences are all jeans and t-shirts or like suits. I wanted to do something different.

This is a program that I've been championing within @nivenly@hachyderm.io over the past year, after we noticed that security vulnerabilities weren't being disclosed responsibly, and not enough research was going into the security of Fediverse software.

You might remember my Pixelfed vulnerability from last year, where OAuth scopes weren't checked allowing for privilege escalation via the API (CVE-2024-25108), that was our very first test-case of this program.

I'm incredibly proud to be involved in launching the Fediverse Security Fund from Nivenly Foundation (a 501(c)4 not-for-profit cooperative)

Okay, okay, at @nova@hachyderm.io's prompting, an #introduction post:

Hi
πŸ‘‹πŸ»πŸ‘‹πŸ» I'm Emelia, from #berlin, #germany, I'm trans, queer, and kinky.

I'm a
#tech princess πŸ‘ΈπŸ»πŸ‘ΈπŸ» currently working on Fediverse Trust & Safety tooling and contributing to various Fediverse projects. I'm on the infrastructure team for @hachyderm@hachyderm.io

I was tech lead at
@iftas@mastodon.iftas.org (Nov 2023 – Sep 2024), I'm currently independent, funded by you and grants.

In 2020, I became the
#founder of Unobvious Technology, aiming to improve the safety, #security and profitability of #sexworkers and advance the #adultindustry

p.s., the tech princess thing is a joke because I think it's fun to wear ballgowns to tech conferences.

People still don't get T&S β€” and that's a problem (by Alice Hunsberger of Everything In Moderation*)

β€œAs we shared our origin stories, a pattern emerged: nearly everyone at that table had been hackers, activists, punks, grassroots organisers, or community builders before landing in T&S. We were the people who had figured out that if no one else was going to create the spaces we needed, we'd have to do it ourselves.”

Wait, what?? I was always taught the sperm breaks into the egg in sex ed, which for me was 2005-2009, yet we've known this wasn't the case since the 80s?!

@chad@mstdn.ca @dansup@mastodon.social @deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org and that's kinda the problem isn't it? Doing multiple large things isn't sustainable, and it means that stuff like this drags on. If he wants to focus on loops, great, find someone to lead pixelfed, but trying to be the leader of multiple projects but not actually doing the things a leader should be doing isn't good for the fediverse.

One person alone shouldn't be attempting to build everything for the fediverse, others might build things if they think there's space for them to build, but instead Dan says he's going to do XYZ repeatedly and then fails to deliver.

Focus is a good thing, especially when the complexity we have is involved, and it's not like people haven't been trying to get answers on this. Posting publicly wasn't my first choice months ago.

Emelia πŸ‘ΈπŸ»πŸ‘ΈπŸ»
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io

@chad@mstdn.ca @dansup@mastodon.social @deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org trying to do everything often leads to doing all things poorly.

The blossoming fedi software is all ones where the folks are actually focused on just that project, whether that's the mastodon team with mastodon, rimu's team with piefed, julian and nodebb, bonfire and bonfire social.

Meanwhile Dan somehow things he can build a TikTok and a Instagram and a WhatsApp competitor all at once with fairly minimal team β€” he's the outlier here, and I don't think this behaviour should necessarily be encouraged because it is giving poor results and underdelivering to people.

P.s., y'all, if you'd looked at the Fediverse Security Fund and been confused about how to make a request for payment, we've now added some docs and a process for that.

Somehow we managed to overlook that when we originally announced the fund
