Seriously asking.
Do you think that public institutions should get involved in funding social media platforms as a service? Would you want your tax-euros to go to that?

imho no tax money needed for the fediverse. But support is very much needed. Support by presence (like yours), by taking it serious, by publicity.
It would be a slap in the face, though, if the EU would fund projects like W with money. The linked article https://bingx.com/en/news/post/eu-backs-million-launch-of-w-to-rival-x-beta-slated-by-february to me sounds as if the EU indeed is funding it: "European Union institutions and allied policymakers are supporting a €500 million initiative to launch W"

1. the vulture capitalists have a plan that takes 500 M€
2. Someone attached to the EU has said a kind word about the idea of a non-US social media platform.

Not necessarily there being any direct connection even in the statements, even less so any funding from the EU.
