I see this prompted a bunch of spicy takes, so to be clear -- in the near term, 🀷🀷. SDDM will continue to work as it does now.

Why the
😞😞? It's about uncertainty. Is a significant amount of SDDM development and maintenance effort coming from KDE folks, who will now be working on PLM instead? Are Linux distributions migrating from SDDM to PLM?

@emaste@mastodon.social KDE Plasma has two login managers in dominant use:

* SDDM
* LightDM

Plasma Login Manager was forked from SDDM to offer a more integrated option leveraging systemd and Plasma features, but
@kde@floss.social (as a project) still supports SDDM (and continues to develop its SDDM integrations) for non-systemd OSes, and the LightDM KDE Greeter also exists as well (though it's not commonly used).

We want to continue supporting our BSD friends if they can help us in doing so. KDE
❀❀️ FreeBSD.

@neal@social.gompa.me @emaste@mastodon.social @kde@floss.social the moment you start requiring systemd is the moment my donations stop. DrKonqi sutuation almost made me stop.

@kanazir@mastodon.social @emaste@mastodon.social @kde@floss.social The larger problem we have is that when we (KDE) ask for help for supporting the alternate paths, nobody steps up to help. If nobody shows up, what are we supposed to do?

The DrKonqi situation happened because nobody showed up when
@sitter@fosstodon.org reached out and asked for assistance to solve this for those.

Supporting these codepaths isn't free. It requires expertise, maintainership, and continuous productive feedback to keep things working. We want to, but we can't do it alone!
