They did the right thing, which is to encapsulate it. They covered it in a radiant barrier and then modern siding. I just wish that someone had informed me. Eh, maybe I'll just leave it in there. I've cracked a few of them while demoing the wall (good thing I've been treating all dust like it's hazardous) but it's not crumbling or anything. It's safer entombed in the wall than getting handled by a bunch of waste disposal folks.
