@foone@digipres.club it was the British who decided that gauge was going to be different for different types of metals and for wires vs sheet. Americans ran with it.

@smellsofbikes@mastodon.social @foone@digipres.club I've had people straight up refuse to believe that 12 gauge mild steel isn't the same thickness as 12 gauge stainless or brass or copper or aluminum, much less that none of them are the same as each other either. Absolute madness.
