@lispi314@udongein.xyz "obsession with trees instead of graphs" something something models predispose implementation, once multics debuted the idea of the hierarchical filesystem it was only a matter of time before the implications of that decision spilled out to other areas too (the past half century and a bit of computing orthodoxy really being highly elaborated and selective multics fanfiction)

@allison@hidamari.apartments The multics part is amusing, but yes, model frequently reflects priorities even when they aren't explicitly stated.

"The centralized control and fiefdoms are a feature, not a bug" kind of priorities.

@lispi314@udongein.xyz Oh I was being dead serious, if Dennis and Van Horn had discovered capabilities just a few years earlier than they actually did, the computing world would look very different.

@allison@hidamari.apartments Our is the doomed timeline, isn't it?

dango_sigh what could've been...

(Thing is, I refuse to believe the continued problem is purely inertia. Some parties have a vested interest in ensuring the problem continues.)

@lispi314@udongein.xyz Well let me put it this way, can you read the decision to build a "computing utility" as anything but political? General Electric alongside Bell Labs and MIT had a vested interest in transposing power structures from the physical world by way of analogy and things like the hierarchical file system worked were a key part of that. Modern implementers continue in a state where they not only ignore the implicit politics of their actions due to conceptual illiteracy, but PERPETUATE such illiteracy intentionally in the name of pretending that this is the best of all possible worlds and nobody has a hope or prayer of doing better.
