Just saw someone's rather kickass LED project for their bike and then I realized I had never ported over my past projects to this account. No longer!

This first video is from around 2020. I didn't end up using the LED helmet daily because having it wired to the bike was problematic and the only battery pack I had available for this solution was quite bulky. Still, it looked neato and I'd probably have broken it out for a group night ride just to blend in better with other weirdos.

This was taken around 2022, but I still ride with this setup. The bike is a Trek 520 touring. The LEDs are 5v WS2812B in a silicone channel that somewhat diffuses the light. Powered by a USB power bank in one of the saddle bags and driven by an ESP32 running WLED.

I generally have it running a red-only, partly because I love how it looks but also because I think red is the most attention-grabbing color to use when riding at night. Just getting the attention of a driver, though, doesn't always equate to safety. I still try to avoid being anywhere near a nearby vehicle's path of travel and generally don't trust any other vehicle on the road to treat my bike properly as another vehicle
