Remember when the internet was full of NERDS who ran mailservers... :(

Running OWA in 2001 for your family was a right of passage... or was that just me?

You had a machine big enough to run Exchange in 2001? Nice. All I had was a Deskpro running Courier and Squirrelmail.

@kajer@infosec.exchange @molly0xfff@hachyderm.io i am still a nerd and i still run a mailserver :D

I have had entire AS numbers added to the mystery blocklist because i had an MX record for mailinator on a domain. That domain was canceled by the registrar because of said MX record.

Running your own mailserver in 2025 is a flex, as big email keeps doing weird shit to make it harder to self host. Yes, SPAM and shit is a problem, but that mystery denylist everyone subscribes to is a bigger problem.

@kajer@infosec.exchange @molly0xfff@hachyderm.io so it seems like if you have a static ip in a datacenter, and thats not "someones cloud" - i mean like, i physically have actual iron in a colo here in san diego - and its got full forward/reverse dns done up - i have site to site wireguard tunnels so that the mailserver physically in my house can talk across those tunnels and egress to the internet on a datcenter IP, and that seems to work just great?

I have iron in a colo and WG all of my home traffic via ... I get all sorts of weird shit for using my /48 and /26 on a daily basis.

Maybe your colo isn't as accessible as Hurricane is? Given how cheap a rack is, it's probably no surprise there are ~100 customers ripping the internet to shreds from there. /shrug

his business is leasing servers, though

Man, I miss my shadycolo(tm) deal. We had a full /24 and 20A of power for pennies.... We even got free apple FC disk shelves after the owner of sex.com sold the domain and fucked off.
