If I say there are other humans, of varying abilities, but all humans, as a species, I can reject selfishness, choosing self over others, without positing anything extra animal about humans. I may or may not include animals. Not treating humans as mere animals could be done by treating them as humans, as same animal as me. But if I’m cruel it’s precisely bc they are human.
