GB News says it’s a news channel. But we’ve done a deep dive into the channel’s output and found the language it uses distorts reality – especially about migrants.
Look at the words “migrant” or “immigrant”. There are tens of thousands of words that you could put before them. But when you crunch the numbers, more than half the time someone says “migrant” or “immigrant” on GB News the word “illegal” comes first.
In reality, last year irregular arrivals made up less than 10% of people coming to the UK. And there are lots of other examples. What the channel is saying simply doesn’t match up to reality.
When we showed GB News our data, it said we had “understated the importance” of migration to “the British public”. But surely people only care this much about migration because the right-wing press keeps talking about it, over and over, in the most provoking way possible?
