Sex-reversal in birds (genetically male/female but appear female/male) is surprisingly common.

Best detail: A genetically male bird, called a laughing kookaburra, had recently laid an egg.

"The discovery is likely to β€œraise some eyebrows” (or is it ruffle some feathers?), says Blanche Capel, a biologist at Duke University who wasn’t involved in the new work. Although sex determination is often viewed as a straightforward process, she explains, the reality is much more complicated."
