@technotenshi@infosec.exchange It's not so much backlash as just illumination. If we're being honest, 95% of the attendees at DEF CON are either corporate suits trying to make their bosses more money (or prevent their bosses from losing money, I suppose. Same thing.) or people who heard there was a lot of money in cybersecurity, seeking to "break in" so they can get a good-paying job.

The hacker ethos still exists, but it exists in small pockets in the hallways and corners, and is being pushed out more and more each year.

The conference itself is just Black Hat pt2... which really makes it just RSAC pt3. It's been trending that way for at least half a decade. Glad to see articles
finally starting to call it out, rather than continuing to bill it like some kind of elite cybercriminal underworld meetup.
