@8r3n7@mstdn.ca first of all, I'm not interested in extrapolating to everyone — I'm very specifically talking about my personal experience and how to manage it.
Secondly: "if you started over from scratch, following only people who made interesting posts in the trending timeline" This is exactly what I did and what I've always done on social media. It's not like I *wasn't* curating heavily. The problem isn't people I follow — it's who follows me (or doesn't even follow but interacts anyway).

I apologize. Your original post sounded very much like generalization (to me).
I do get a few goofy replies to my posts that rarely get boosted, and seen by a few more people. If the reply is weird, I read their bio.
If their bio makes it clear I could never have a reasonable convseration with them, because their worldview is in some way deeply antithetical to my own, then I mute them. (I tried engaging once or twice, and it failed spectacularly.)
