The current widest tunnel constructed is the 2 mile long (3.2km) State Route 99 tunnel in Seattle, WA at 17.5m wide, a double deck highway.

It took 4 years to dig (3.2km) and was estimated to cost $1bn/km to construct. It ended up costing more.

The #DougFord fever dream would be a 1.5meters WIDER, and would stretch for 50km (never mind the bunch of ravines and valleys that the 401 traverses).

For context on the costs:

- The #Ontario GDP is about $1.1tr, Ford wants to spend 5% of our annual GDP on one unneeded and unadvised project.
- The Ontario Provincial Budget is about $250bn, that means he wants to spend 1/5th of the entire budget on one unneeded and unadvised project.

Unprecedented!

Meanwhile:

- Ontario's housing starts have fallen thanks to the Ford Administrations meddling.
- Healthcare is increasingly being outsourced with worse outcomes and higher costs.
- Ford is taking over school boards so that he can steal land to hand to his developer donors.

@evdelen@mstdn.ca When a friend first saw a headline talking about this Ford pet project, she thought it was satire--a highway under the highway.

Sadly, Doug would just need to say, "Folks, this is part of our made-in-Ontario Canada First plan. We gotta get 'er done!" and he'd be re-elected in a landslide.

The only reason Ford is not further down in the polls is because there is no election in the horizon.

He already disingenuously played his hand to secure a majority at a time when people were highly distracted and anxious. His team knows that his policies are, in fact, deeply unpopular, and they're continuing their strategy of trickling them out slowly enough that they don't garner more attention than what is going on south of the border.

Trump is the perfect gift of distraction for the likes of Ford, Danielle Smith, and all the other administrations that are trying to privatize public services, socialize private losses, and play defence for companies that are mistreating the public! He consumes so much of the presses oxygen that there is nothing left for examination of their actions.
