So, we had a fort of, like, maybe thirty dwarves. (Fair number of animals, but no non-dwarven people.) And, honestly, so far so good for the most part.
Our best (albeit kinda lousy) diagnostician evaluated the political situation and declared herself queen of the dwarves.
I'm not a longtime player, so I didn't know this was possible. It's apparently a lot better than if a monarch had migrated here, but it means our tiny shitty little fort is now a national capitol, which sucks.
But doesn't suck nearly as much as the fact that I've gotta improve the property values of her rooms. We already dug out a mausoleum, a throne room, a bedroom, and a dining room. We just honestly lack most of what we'd use to really significantly improve it to Royal.

And she keeps mandating we build crossbows and amulets! And bans exporting them!

Maddening situation, this.

@katievm what happens if you just... don't pander to the queen. Do you lose the game?

(I'm curious about dwarf fortress but I've never played it)

@z Gotta admit I'm curious about what the result would be, but I figured I'd prolly find out the hard way when, after extensively trying, I prolly would fail to meet her demands anyway.
So far, though, I'm keeping our head above water, so
shrugs
I don't actually know. Maybe there'd be some kind of crisis or rebellion or something. Or maybe she'd, like, die, and we'd have yet another dwarf appoint themself.
I think the main problem is there'd be morale failure, and I just don't feel like that'd be a thing I wanna deal with. We finally have all the dwarves at neutral or happier, which feels like a fucking miracle. We should try to maintain that as long as we can.

Oh right, and we also dug into a fairly vast cavern with several Z-levels. I've sealed off the stairwell that leads to it, just one Z-floor down from my apartment complex.
(If you're curious, I drafted some layouts in a prior post; the legibility is bad, but I think the idea is clear enough.) We went with one of the ones that alternates stairways, but keeps the X and Y positions, so the staircase is just in a slightly different spot in the rooms on floors 1 vs. 3. So in the hallway grid it's like, stair, stair, hall, hall, stair, stair, hall, hall. (Or is it just stair stair hall. I'll have to go look tomorrow.)

To my frustration we continue to have no sand. We'll have to try to bargain for some. I didn't see any brought by the elven traders, though.

I just realized I don't think we have any soap yet.

@z Anyway, that cavern prolly is full of dangerous shit, waiting just out of sight to come up the staircase to kill all my dwarves. Between that and us now being a capitol, I really need to set up that militia.
We are presently building a militia station on the top floor, surface level; in fact, it's actually no longer the top floor. I decided the barracks would be directly above the militia room or whatever it is. Just fits better that way. Advantages of building into the side of a hill, I guess.
Gonna have to make a good staircase straight down through to the bottom floor, though.
So many staircases. Good thing I like staircases.
