Going from the "Yippee!" And "Now this is podracing" butter won't melt in his mouth to "I killed them all" is quite a jump, in my opinion.
Though if I recall, there was a cut scene where he got into a physical fight with a friend because they didn't want to make current child future Sith Lord look like a bad person.
Feels like the same logic as Han not shooting first.
Within the context of the movies, Anakin's entire arc could have been done so much better.
