Oh my god Facebook is awful. Why are people still there?! It's like a digital desert filled with NPCs. Nothing is real.

I've ditched everything Meta but some of my friends and relatives haven't. Their problem is that they mainly use Facebook for very local stuff - things like sharing free stuff, local secondhand selling and buying, local info like blocked roads, lost pets, etc...
No other platform has the numbers to reach a lot of people in one little local ares. The answer has to be a public infrastructure. If local government set up it's own mastodon server and used that for local info - including school, police, doctors, etc - everybody in the locality would use it.
