Have an idea for a story, it involves a very large kinky slow ship between stars. The issue I have is why is it there. How the fuck did they build this multi kilometre long, million ton ship? Like the effort, material, and time to do something like that is bonkers. How did this thing come to exist politically? How was there no infighting and political schism that derailed everything and made the project fail. What could cause tens of thousands of people to get on board this thing and head out into the stars knowing they won't see the destination.

A few years ago I'd have said some world ending apocalypse but now I'm not so sure that would be enough to contain the fighting, or would be too quick to give time to build the ship. If you've got hundreds of years then humans won't get on with building it. If it's a year you don't have time for building this giant ship.
