The silver lining of me being sick during my vacation is that I get the vacation days back, because (with a doctor's note, which I did get) the days are considered sick days, which are unlimited in Germany, one just has to get a specific doctor's note (Arbeitsunfähigkeitsbescheinigung). First six weeks are paid by employer (Lohnfortzahlung), afterwards by health insurance (Krankengeld).
