When I retired like many academics I had an office full of books (3500, now all sold on), but in the new faculty reorganisation currently being visited on my erstwhile colleagues, they are seeing their books treated as if they are just a nuisance for the movers, rather than (as a number have posted out) the tools of their trade.

It may be a 'first world problem' but is emblematic of the disrespect visited on academics by university mangers who see academics just as a cost!

#universities.

@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us I just threw out a stack of MRS journals to make room, but honestly I can’t think of why I felt I needed to keep them. I just remember all of my professors with walls of JACS and such. It seemed like something I should have.

But I came to grad school at the transition. I started grad school look up references on a shelf in Chem Abstracts and ended with SciFinder and absolutely everything at my fingertips online.

Kind of a wild ride.
