Wow - I used the #WritingCommunity hashtag on a poem and got bombarded with fake β€œbestselling authors” wanting to quiz me about my work and profits. I could feel them winding up for the sales pitch - high-dollar marketing and rebranding that promises the moon and delivers nothing - so started blocking. Blocked one and got messaged by a related account. And BTW, it’s offensive to comment with sales pitches on someone’s creative writing post.

WTF, guys? What do y’all real writers think? Disappointed to see this in the Fediverse, but I guess it’s inevitable…

@ElizabethEiler@universeodon.com Yup. I had a guy follow me and say hi. He writes thrillers. At least I have to believe he does, because there is an Amazon page containing a bunch of his books with tens of thousands of reviews each. He started by asking me about my experience with publishing. At one point I said something about how I hated spamming people about my books, and he took offense (misunderstood?). Then he said that there are ways to get sales and reviews without spamming. (continued)

@farbel@mas.to If I was a bestseller with 30,000 reviews on Amazon, I wouldn’t be trolling self-pubbed poets on Mastodon. Sounds like a fake account stealing an author’s identity?
