Historical story time!

I watched a video on YT referencing Dr. Phil and the question was asked if he lost his license to practice as a clinical psychologist. In the comments section, people were saying he stopped renewing his license in 2006 because he had his stupid show and I was confused because I know he was sanctioned for unethical behavior in Texas. I know this because we learned about it in an ethics class in grad school on, you know, what not to do.

Dr. Phil had a dual relationship with a patient, a big fuckin’ no-no, including giving her a job in his office. He was sanctioned by the Texas professional licensing board in 1988 for this and his case was closed in 1990. That same year he co-founded Courtroom Sciences, Inc., and advised lawyers about shit like jury selection and prepping witnesses for trial. So he basically stopped being a treating clinician in 1989/1990, likely because of his sanctions. I’d guess his reputation was ruined and referrals got real slow.

Oprah met him through the Texas beef lawsuit and the rest is history. While he maintained his license until 2006, he was essentially done as a practicing clinician after he was sanctioned.

Strangely, his Wikipedia page has been scrubbed of this information.
