“Is it live, or is it Memorex?” I bet many of you remember that iconic commercial. I’m not sure they still use the line—audio tapes have all but vanished, relics of a bygone era. Still, the phrase lingers, evoking that uncanny moment when you can’t tell the difference between reality and reproduction.

Take this morning’s photo, for example. When I captured it outdoors, I was convinced the flowers were real. But now, looking more closely, I’m not so sure. I’ve questioned myself before—especially with images of Cineraria, whose petals have a texture strikingly like fabric. And in this photo, subtle clues whisper that what I saw may not have been what was there. Nature, it seems, knows how to wear a disguise.
