Trying to figure out if it makes more sense to use a "cloud gateway"/hardware firewall right after the fiber modem to segment the network, or if I should just rely on pro-sumer grade Wifi AP and use port based VLANs.

Ugh. I'm not furry enough for this amount of networking.

The hardware firewall sounds like it'd be better for security, since it would segment everything at the source.

However, I worry about it bottlenecking the whole network since I'm broke as hell and can only afford garbage most of the time.

Not to mention it would
introduce an extra step in the restart procedure in the event of a power outage.

@socketwench@masto.hackers.town My guess is you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the performance. The typical issues are running DPI on the traffic, or pppoe limits on the BSD based systems (Linux has a better pppoe implementation)
