Watchful Flame

I planned to post a photo of a different bird one morning. But while copyediting images from an old SD card, I came across this shot of a northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis). The clear glow in his eye caught me. I’ll admit—cardinals are almost always photogenic.

"A northern cardinal perches with quiet authority among a lattice of slender branches—some leafed in spring green, others bare and brittle like forgotten parchment. The bird’s body is cloaked in a brilliant red, a hue so vivid it seems to hum against the subdued woodland backdrop. Its plumage glows like embers banked in shadow, each feather edged with subtle gradients of crimson and flame. Atop its head rises a sharp, sculpted crest, like a brushstroke of fire frozen mid-motion. The feathers there are slightly longer, swept upward in a proud arc that gives the bird a noble, almost mythic silhouette—part warrior, part woodland sentinel. Its eyes are dark and gleaming, round as polished obsidian. They sit within a bold black mask that frames the face like ink on parchment, lending the cardinal an expression of focused alertness. There’s a quiet intensity in its gaze, as if it’s reading the wind or listening to the hush between rustling leaves. The beak is stout and conical, a vivid orange-red that contrasts sharply with the black mask. Smooth and slightly glossy, it curves into a fine point—perfect for cracking seeds or issuing a sharp call into the morning air. It’s a beak that speaks of precision and purpose, nestled beneath the watchful eye and fiery crest.
